Home Kenya Initiative Malawi Initiative News Brighter Tomorrow at Origin

Consumers throughout the world are increasingly demanding assurance that drinks are made from quality ingredients and produced in a sustainable way. We are fully committed to sustainability, which results from a responsible approach to both coffee production and sourcing. This approach will help to improve the lives of coffee/tea farmers and their families.
Brighter Tomorrow at Origin has a similar objective to Fairtrade; however, it operates slightly differently. Rather than just paying a basic standard price (as with Fairtrade) we work with the farmers from each co-operative to help them improve the quality of their product, in turn allowing them to command a higher price for their whole yield. We source our coffee directly from the co-operatives and have established mutual relationships with their communities. In addition, the Kenyan co-operative that we purchase our coffee from is also UTZ Certified; a scheme that ensures key social and environmental standards are met.
The Ndumberi estate is located in the rich agricultural area in the district of Kiambu (Central Province, Kenya). Large estates supply most Kenyan coffee, but 20% comes from the small-scale shamba (farm) holders and co-operatives. These co-operatives often do not have the resources or know-how to invest in production facilities and sustainable farming techniques.

Through a number of initiatives, Brighter Tomorrow at Origin helps the farmers in improving the quality of the beans they grow. In 2006, we sponsored renovation and expansion works to modernise the outdated equipment. In 2007, we funded the construction of a health clinic for the Ndumberi co-operative and the local community. In 2008, we plan to initiate similar projects such as upgrading and expanding the existing farming facilities.

The Kawalazi estate is situated in the Nkhatabay district along the lakeshore valley of Northern Malawi. The estate is 45 kilometres South-East of Mzuzu and is the only tea and macadamia plantation in the Northern and Central parts of the country. The company has close to 2600 employees on average, working in the tea and macadamia fields, factories, workshop etc, making it the largest employer in the Northern region of Malawi.

In Malawi, one of the world's poorest nations, Brighter Tomorrow at Origin supports tea producers from the Kawalazi plantation. In 2007, we funded distribution of free tree seedlings in the local Kawalazi community to address the critical issue of de-forestation and soil erosion. In 2008, we will be initiating a tobacco-to-tea conversion project, with a view to provide farmers a more sustainable means of income.
